It's that time again. The August Full Moon is here and it occupies Pisces space along with Neptune. This positioning will blend the world of illusion and reality, the dreamworld and the physical, which makes your personal world more malleable.
Now is a great time for cleansing, rituals, manifestation and setting new intentions. I don't know about you all, but New Moon energy always affects me strongly. The effects can range from: irritability, moodiness, an excess of energy and even psychic experiences.
The Moon has held an exalted position in human history and rightfully so. Since it is our natural satellite, the Moon affects us (here on Earth), in both subtle and conspicuous ways. Physically, the Moon influences the tides, the ebb and flow of the ocean, and even our bodies (humans are mostly water); spiritually, it houses our unconscious mind or our instinctual desires and reactions.
The power of the Moon lies within our subconscious realm (and vice versa) which makes a Full Moon quite a powerful time. The Moon is associated with darkness and through that connection it signifies creation. This is why I decided to make a list titled, "3 Things You Can Do For the New Moon":
- Cleansing
Think about a really depressing person you know and you'll see what I mean. This is an example of how our internal reality affects the external. The time-span between a New Moon and a Full Moon is the time in which our dominant thought patterns and behaviors begin to take root. Life presents many challenges and stressors that can make us feel negative so the Full Moon is the time to let all of that go.
Just let it go.
The Moon is commonly themed with water (yin, emotions, and dreams). This is why tonight's moon can be a powerful stage for releasing energy. Metaphysically, the waters of the Moon washes over us and takes away our impurities. This is especially true for the Water Trio: Pisces, Scorpio, and Cancer who can tap into their native element to bring about profound change.
The Full Moon is very useful, then, because it presents an opportunity to release any buildup that no longer serves us.
An easy way to do this is through writing. First, grab a piece of paper (extra points if you use parchment) and your favorite writing utensil. Secondly, write down anything that has been weighing you down. I mean really get into it; the point is to get these things off your chest. Once you feel you've gotten all of your feelings out it's time for the next step. Third, under the Full Moon recite an affirmation stating what you desire.
For instance:
I, [Your Name], release and detach from all issues, mental formations, worries, and concerns that have plagued me. I no longer identify with any thoughtforms or energies or anxieties that deflate my mood. I release them to the truth of reality. May my soul/spirit be cleansed.
When that is done you can burn the paper using a candle. If you don't have a candle a lighter works. After that just sit with the feeling of being emptied out.
2. Rituals
Rituals are potent tools for utilizing the power of the Full Moon. Ancient cultures used a myriad of forms to capture the feminine energy of creation. These techniques range from: dancing, drumming, singing, or chanting to burning, sacrificing or edifying locations. The possibilities are essentially limitless and you can have a lot of fun figuring out what form of expression most resonates with you.
I find dancing to be a very interesting way to commune with the energies of a Full Moon. Africans and Native Americans long used dance as a form of channeling. Shamans would set out and cleanse a sacred space wherein their work occurred. The entire practice would normally take the form of a ceremony with food and family joining in; it was a very big affair.
Your practice doesn't have to be as involved as the ancients. What I like to do is choose a song, or a couple of songs, that make me feel invigorated. Before I turn them on I sit or stand and let the music enter my body. Then, I begin.
It is important not to judge yourself during this exercise. It's supposed to be playful and expressive. This very much relates to a cleansing ritual in that you are working out your feelings and emotions.
If you are aware of your spirit animal or, perhaps, have a personal deity who you commune with or an ancestor, this can be a time where you grow closer with your personal spirit guide. Spiritual beings lack a physical body so they need a vessel, i.e. you, to experience the physical world. This is considered a symbiotic exchange. You gain access to higher realms of existence and the energies there to use in your everyday life while the entity can live in the flesh and blood.
Note: If you are unfamiliar with the spirit you are calling, then best not to interact with it. The Full Moon is ample time to open yourself up and you don't want a leech or negative presence to attach to you.
Preparing oils or flowers for your spirit is a beneficial way to give gratitude for what you are about to do.
3. New Intentions
This category combines the first two as it involves cleansing yourself of negative energies and performing a method of intention. This makes setting new intentions both a physical and spiritual experience. So this post is less about how to set a new intention and more about what the action entails.
How you go about performing this is largely subjective. You can perform a ritual as simple as taking a shower, doing outside yoga and meditating. You could create a medicine wheel and simply stand in it. You could run around naked.
Really, it's up to you. The important thing is to do what feels comfortable and meaningful to you. Also, clarity is key. Be sure that what you want is actually what you want. This involves having done a level of introspection beforehand or maybe you're naturally introspective. Either way it is crucial you are honest with yourself because what you put out, inevitably returns to you.
In the event that your intention is not your own, you can find circumstances reflecting a foreign reality. You may find yourself in situations that you did not desire. While this discomfort will provide a lesson to learn from, you can avoid unnecessary pain by turning your lenses inward and discovering what you really want.
Oddly, this is exactly what the Moon is for. As I mentioned above, the Moon represents our subconscious, so our desires may be hidden from our conscious awareness. In this way, setting a new intention can be a time where we uncover exactly who we are and who we want to be. It involves a time of reflection where we look into the past (without being bogged down by it), discover what works and what doesn't, and decide to head in a new direction.
